Are blacks living in Dunwoody Atlanta welcome?

by Wade Morris Dunwoody Realtor on June 29th, 2010

Please be honest! I’m trying to decide between Midtown, Buckhead, and Dunwoody. Which of these areas is the most black friendly? Where blacks can walk into a store or restaurant and feel 100% welcome? What I mean is, which areas welcome blacks as their clientele? Thanks so much, we appreciate your help. :)
We picked these areas because natives of Atlanta said they are safe. That’s what we’re looking for, a safe area near grocery stores, restaurants, and shopping. We have a 3 year old.

Wow, I wish I could answer this for you…I just feel so bad that in this day and age nice people like you have to ask questions like this. I wish you well no matter where you end up, and that people are more tolerant of one another.

    Yes.

Is Dunwoody a snobby, whitebread, Republican domianted area? Yes, it is. But you’re not going to get the evil eye for patronizing bars and restaurants in the area for Christ’s sake. I mean this is Atlanta, not some hick town in rural Alabama still simmering over the Civil Rights Act with residents who think university educated blacks are “uppity.” Every time we eat in the area we see a fair number of blacks as both fellow patrons and working in the area.

I would stay away from Buckhead simply because it’s a cheesy, overpriced, old money trash. Given that public schools in metro Atlanta aren’t always the safest of places you would probably want your child to attend one of the area’s private schools – at a cost of about $20,000 a year. The same would apply for Midtown.

On the other hand, the schools in Dunwoody are pretty good. Nothing much to worry about it.

To answer your question, aside from the standard idiot you’ll run into in any city in any part of the country, you and your family will be fine in Dunwoody.

I live in Little 5 Points, but I don’t think that would be your scene.

It’s Atlanta, it is ALL black-friendly.

No worries there! What you should be asking is what neighborhood will give you the most that you are looking for.
Dunwoody is a cute suburb with nice homes and close to shopping areas.
Me personally, I would never live there. Too cookie cutter.
I LOVE downtown Decatur. It’s very walkable, family friendly, with beautiful homes and a strong neighborhood that holds many festivals and events.

I have to agree with green_mama2be, Perfect Purple, and Jeniffer B. You really shouldn’t have to worry about this issue at all. Rather, consider what else matters; cost of living, good schools, proximity to work, etc.

Yeah sure. Johns Creek is good too, if you can make it there. Very multicultural area, and it has really god schools.

Dunwoody is fine for Blacks. My wife is African-American and we fit in great in Dunwoody. You’ll find that when you go the the restaurants at night in Dunwoody, about half of the clientele will be multicultural.
