Both are great places to live. Dunwoody is a little closer to Atlanta than Alpharetta. Both have good school districts and are good suburban areas. Traffic will be horrible in both places, but that is Metro Atlanta.
Personally, I like Alpharetta more. You are further out, but still close to Atlanta.
both should be pretty safe. As mentioned, Alpharetta is a bit further out. (about 15 miles up Ga. 400) Both are yupscale suburbs. With Dunwoody being closer to the city, it has alot more condo’s / apts etc. Alpharetta is more suburban, meaning that it is mostly single family homes. Both will have horrible traffic and be expensive to live in.
Both are great places to live. I just advise that you move close to where ever you plan on working. Dunwoody is closer to the city of Atlanta. Alpharetta is north of Dunwoody and a longer trip into the city. You can take GA 400 from either of the places to get into the city. Although I prefer Alpharetta over Dunwoody.
