A Condo in downtown Decatur would be perfect…downtown Decatur is very hip and very nice ….a house in the Emory area would be nice….and Dunwoody is great too…not quite as interesting ass Downtown Decatur and the Emory area…but a nice area. It just depends on what kind of money you are talking about….if you have kids and money…see about the Oakhurst Area off of LaVista Road. The areas near Northlake Mall in Tucker are nice….If you want to find a midpoint….Look at area off N. Druid Hills Road in Atlanta…so many nice choices in the area around where you are working.
Brookhaven. Smack dab in the middle.

(I used to live right off North Druid Hills on Roxboro – no proper neighborhood name but a wonderful neighborhood, closer to Emory than to Dunwoody – but there’s a lot of houses, both new construction and old tucked away in there.)
I lived for 5 years about a mile east of Emory near Clairmont and North Decatur Rd., and I commuted to Dunwoody off 400. Decatur is fantastic as the other person recommended. I have to warn you, though, that your commute will be awful. The mornings are more civilized (especially if you get onto I-285 before 7:00 a.m. or take Clairmont Rd. after 8:00 a.m.), but the evening drive could take you 40-80 minutes. I tried every possible shortcut over the years. Add another 10 minutes to those times if you’re going to downtown Decatur.
MARTA from Decatur to Perimeter Mall is an option. But you’re looking at about 40-45 minutes each way on the train. Then you would have to walk or drive from the station to your office. At least you could get a lot of reading done, but there’s no way to speed up the commute.
Brookhaven is an intriguing idea. Your wife could commute on North Druid Hills, Briarcliff, and Clifton Road — not the worst commute despite a few chokepoints near I-85. And your commute would be reasonable because you could take Ashford-Dunwoody Rd. from Peachtree all the way to Perimeter Mall. So overall, I have to agree with the person who recommended Brookhaven. I would recommend extending the search toward I-85 as well (at least between the areas bounded by Buford Highway, N. Druid Hills, and Clairmont). Buford Highway is extremely sketchy, but there are some nicer areas not far to the northwest.
The closer you get to Lenox Mall, the more the prices will escalate. So take a good look at Brookhaven, and you might find a neighborhood you like — at prices lower than the Lenox area.
