What areas have good schools and are generally considered the nicest places to live in the Atlanta area?

by Wade Morris Dunwoody Realtor on May 1st, 2007

My wife and I and our 2 kids are moving to the Atlanta area for work (transferring offices). We know nothing about the area other than people seem to claim the north side of Atlanta is much nicer than the South side and crime is much worse on the South side as well. Our kids are in public grammar school and we would like to keep them in public school if at all possible. Can anyone help us with what areas in the Atlanta area have great school systems? As far as home value goes we’re looking to buy in the 500-600k range. I have also heard how bad the traffic can get. My office will be in Dunwoody just north of 285. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Dunwoody/ Roswell is definitely looking like your best bet….
Gwinnett is also one of the best.

Gwinnet or dunwoody, they have great reputations

The Dunwoody & Sandy Springs area is a great place to live. Close to the city but very suburban. In your price range you will have plenty of options for housing.

Parts of Dunwoody are in Dekalb County others in Fulton. I would advice against public schools in the Dekalb School district. My personal recommendations for the best schools are in neighboring Cobb County, Fulton and to the east Gwinett County.

Dunwoody is a newly formed city so who knows what the tax rate will settle at for them. They recently broke away from Fulton County services and just launched their police department yesterday. Taxes are lower in Cobb and Gwinett.

The advice you got about north side/south side is accurate. Of course there are pockets of exception but if you are working in Dunwoody the north side is the best option for your family.

Concentrate your real estate search to the area north of 285, roughly bordered by Peachtree Industrial Blvd. to the east and I-75 to the west. However there are some very nice neighborhoods just inside the Perimeter (I-285) along Ashford Dunwoody and Peachtree Dunwoody roads.

Good luck and welcome to Atlanta. Don’t worry about the traffic, it’s mostly a topic of conversation, the reality is our traffic is no worse than any other major metropolitan area. It’s a great place to live.

You are correctly informed that the north side of town is nicer & safer. I would suggest Cobb County schools (Marietta) and maybe look up in Alpharetta or Sandy Springs. Traffic on the I-285 north area btwn I-75 & I-85 on I-285 is often congested during rush hour.

Gwinnette County is ok… just ok…. Cobb County is much better!! Especially the Kennesaw Mountain H.S, Pine Mountain Middle School and Hayes Elementary district. Do a little research or consider taking a quick weekend trip with your wife to visit for yourself. Nothing is worse than moving here baised on other peoples opinion only to find out you don’t like it.
